Practical questions

STI sample labels and transport: check before collection

Check labels, kit contents and return arrangements before collecting an STI sample, not after the tube is closed. Correct collection is only one part of a usable specimen. Identity, specimen site and transport instructions must also match the laboratory’s requirements, particularly when several samples are being collected at the same visit.

Resolve identity and site questions first

Check the requested identifiers and whether each tube is intended for urine, vaginal, throat, rectal or another specimen. If preprinted details are wrong, contact the service before collecting rather than crossing them out without instructions. Ask when and how the collection date or time should be recorded. Do not use another person’s kit or swap labels to correct a mix-up; the service must be able to trace the specimen to the right person and request.

Know the return route before opening packaging

Ask about the accepted container, any transport medium, packaging, storage conditions and return deadline for the exact assay. Culture and molecular kits may have different requirements; no universal room-temperature or refrigeration rule is supplied here. Confirm whether collection is sensible if a courier or laboratory will be unavailable. Do not pour out an unfamiliar liquid or transfer the swab into a household container because it seems easier to seal.

Report a collection problem honestly

Contact the service after a spill, contamination, leaking tube, uncertain label or missed return instruction. Explain what happened and let the laboratory decide whether a replacement is needed. Do not conceal the problem or assume a negative result will still answer the intended question. Keep the request reference and ask how receipt and results are confirmed. A completed collection is not a confirmed diagnosis or a guarantee that every ordered specimen has arrived and been accepted.

Common questions

Should I collect before checking an incorrect label?

No. Ask the issuing service to resolve the identity problem first.

Do all kits use the same storage conditions?

No. Follow the instructions for the actual container and assay.

Can I hide a spill if enough liquid remains?

No. Tell the service so specimen suitability can be assessed.

Sources and information limits
