Practical questions
Do you need to fast for STI blood tests?
Do not assume that every STI blood test requires fasting, or that none of the tests in a combined appointment does. Preparation follows the exact order, not the phrase full panel. Ask the testing service for written instructions before changing meals, fluids or medicines, particularly if fasting could affect your health.

Read the full order rather than one test name
A visit may combine infection testing with other blood investigations that have different preparation requirements. Ask which named tests need preparation, what that preparation involves and whether a morning appointment is actually necessary. General blood-test guidance explains that only some tests require fasting. Do not apply a friend’s diabetes, cholesterol or surgery instructions to your STI appointment; the clinician or laboratory should explain the requirements for your own order.

Make any fasting plan safe and specific
If fasting is requested, confirm the permitted fluids and the start and end instructions directly with the team. Tell them about diabetes, pregnancy, fainting during blood collection or medicines that need food. Do not stop prescriptions or alter insulin on your own to satisfy a generic web checklist. Ask how the appointment can be arranged safely and what to do if you feel unwell; do not continue fasting through concerning symptoms without medical advice.

Be honest if preparation did not go as planned
If you ate, drank something outside the instructions or took medicine differently, tell the collector before the sample is drawn. The team can decide which tests remain suitable or whether any part needs rearranging; do not cancel all care or hide the deviation yourself. Fasting also does not change the biological detection window after an exposure. Discuss exposure dates separately so a well-prepared blood draw is not mistaken for a definitive result at any time.

Common questions
Must I fast simply because the visit is for STIs?
Do not assume so. Confirm the preparation for the actual ordered tests.
Can I stop medicine to prepare?
Only change prescribed treatment on specific advice from the responsible clinician.
Does fasting shorten a detection window?
No. Sample preparation and time since exposure are separate issues.

Content policy and review statusQuestions before arranging an appointment?
Enquire about the next steps and availability. An enquiry does not confirm a booking or diagnosis and is not an emergency service.
